Maitland-Australian Physiotherapy Seminars has always maintained that Manual Therapy is a process of lifelong learning. No matter what your level of experience, there is always room for personal improvement, whether it is further refining your assessment and clinical reasoning skills, or applying a specific manual therapy technique as accurately and effectively as possible. The need for self-assessment and continued professional growth is an integral part of maintaining and improving proficiency in the Maitland-Australian Approach.  All Certified MAPS COMTs are required to show evidence of ongoing learning and/or scholarly activities in order to continue to use the COMT designation. This is similar to re-certification requirements for Physical Therapists in many other organizations, including the ABPTS.  

COMTs are required to submit a completed COMT Recertification application to MAPS every 5 years from the date in which the MAPS certification Exam was successfully completed. To better assist you determine the 5-year period before all Re-Certification requirements are due, below is a list of Exam dates and their corresponding Re-certification Deadline Dates.

To be eligible for COMT recertification you must first meet the following criteria:

  1. Maintain at least part-time (10 hours per week) clinical practice to pertaining patient care
  2. Agree to continue to abide by the Code of Ethics of the APTA
  3. Send a completed Recertification Application to MAPS prior to your recertification deadline.

If you meet the criteria above, you must also provide proof of completion of the continuing education requirement within the 5-year Re-certification period. FAAOMPTs are exempt from the continuing education requirement, but still need to submit a Recertification application with the required attachments.

Choose one activity from Group I 
OR  two activities from Group II.
 

Group I (only 1 needed)

  1. Attend a MAPS Symposium
  2. Attend an annual AAOMPT conference
  3. Be actively enrolled in, or a graduate of an AAOMPT credentialed Fellowship Program and hold an active FAAOMPT designation
  4. Be actively enrolled in, or a graduate of an APTA credentialed Residency Program
  5. Be actively enrolled in, or a graduate of an Australian Manual Therapy Masters Program at an approved Australian University
  6. Active Military Duty

Group II (minimum of 2 needed)

  1. Attend a MAPS course that was NOT required for your COMT. You may take two MAPS courses that were not required for your COMT to satisfy the entire Recertification requirement for one COMT re-certification period. NOTE: Taking TWO MAPS On-Demand courses is equal to a single MAPS course for COMT Re-Certification purposes – see option b. below)
  2. Complete TWO MAPS On-Demand Courses: MT-1: PRE-COURSE, MT-2: PRE-COURSE, or WEB-MMT: The Mechanisms of Manual Therapy. Only COMTs who passed their exams prior to December 2020 are eligible for this option. Link to Pre-Course registration form
  3. Pass an ABPTS Specialists Exam in any area
  4. Submit an article to be published (or be listed as co-author). Must pertain to Orthopedic Manual Therapy in a peer-reviewed journal ( i.e. research articles, case studies, etc.)
  5. Lab Assist a MAPS Course. This must be pre-authorized and pre-arranged through MAPS Clinical Director in advance, to be eligible please send current resume and cover letter including information on locations and courses you are willing to assist to Erika@ozpt.com or fax 631-298-3810
