COMT Exam Description (2+ Days)
A rigorous examination process that tests the candidate’s knowledge and hands-on application of the competencies learned in the Core MAPS Curriculum Prerequisites. These competencies were presented/learned in MT-1, MT-2, MT-3, MT-FMC (or MT-ST), MT-O, and MT-4. Multiple Exam Components: written short-answer, multiple choice, and an OSCE-oral/practical (a hands-on exam of manual skills). Examinations focus on competencies in the Maitland-Australian Approach to clinical decision-making, advanced orthopedic clinical practice, accurate techniques of assessment and treatment, effective treatment progression, and safety.

2024-2025 Curriculum Changes

· As of January 1, 2024, those who achieved a 70% or better on the Orthopedic Diagnostic Evaluation Competency Exam (MT-O Test-Out) will not be required to attend and successfully complete the MT-O course itself.

· MT-UC: Upper Cervical Dysfunction will be added to the Certification Curriculum requirements for all COMT candidates who sit for their exams as of January 1, 2025.

Description

COMT Exam Description (2+ Days) A rigorous examination process that tests the candidate's knowledge and hands-on application of the competencies learned in the Core MAPS Curriculum Prerequisites. These competencies were presented/learned in MT-1, MT-2, MT-3, MT-FMC (or MT-ST), MT-O and MT-4. Examinations take place over two days, but scheduling for the written and practical exams vary, and participants must be available for testing all three days, or as directed in their final confirmation letters. New in 2024: For those COMT candidates who successfully complete the Orthopedic Diagnostic Evaluation Competency Exam (MT-O Test-Out) with a grade of 70% or better, the MT-O course itself is optional. Multiple exam components include:
  • written short-answer
  • multiple choice, and
  • an OSCE-oral/practical (a hands-on exam of manual skills).
These exams emphasize competencies in:
  1. clinical decision-making
  2. advanced orthopedic clinical practice
  3. accurate techniques of assessment/treatment,
  4. effective treatment progression and safety.
COMT Exam Requirements Open to PTs and Physicians who have successfully completed the following prerequisites: MT-1: Essential Peripheral Seminar, MT-2: Essential Spinal Seminar, MT-3: Intermediate Spinal Seminar, MT-FMC: Motor Control Strategies to Maximize Rehabilitation and Function (or MT-ST: Stabilization Training & Functional Rehabilitation Seminar), MT-O: Evidence-Based Orthopedic Diagnostic Evaluation Seminar (or successful completion of the MT-O Competency Exam @ required minimum competency of 70% or better), and MT-4: Differential Assessment & Clinical Reasoning Seminar. Enrollment limited. COMT Exam Applicants who achieve a passing grade in each examination component (70% or better) will become CERTIFIED at the Intermediate level of Manual Physiotherapy, and may adopt the designation of Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT) as a professional credential.
