Weekend course: 13.5 Live hours over 2 days
Month long course: 3.5 Live hours one night/week over 4 weeks
May be taken as the first course in the MAPS series. An evidence-based introduction to the Maitland-Australian approach to orthopedic manual therapy (OMT), focusing on effective assessment and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal disorders of the Spine. Includes all the same information as the live, in-person MT-2: Essential Spinal Seminar, excluding the in-person supervised hands-on laboratory. For those who wish to advance to higher level courses or become a Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT), completion an MT-2 Skills Check Lab is required as well - see brief description below. The required Home Study of 16.3 hours is completed online, at your own pace through MAPS Online Learning, which includes a 6.3-hour PowerPoint lecture presentation.
Participants are presented with peer-reviewed published evidence supporting the mechanical, neurophysiological, immunological, and psychological mechanisms of action of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (OMT). As part of the live course preparation, evidence from recent Systematic Reviews and RCTs are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the approach, and specific conditions that respond to OMT.

The Maitland-Australian approach is extremely patient-centric and focuses upon highly specific subjective & objective physical examination processes. Clinical Reasoning and constant reassessment are taught and emphasized. Methods of assessment and treatment are demonstrated during the live component of the course and a real-time patient assessment is demonstrated and analyzed.

The hard-bound course manual includes detailed step-by-step instructions for each technique and more than 270 photographs. Over 900 references are provided.
A blended online and live learning experience, in which the pre-course materials and additional home study are provided through MAPS Online Learning, in combination with a live two-day weekend seminar through our virtual classroom. If I attend MT-2 REMOTE LIVE, should I also attend the MT-2 Skills Check Lab?
The MT-2 Skills Check Lab is the hands-on lab-only component of the 2-day live, in-person MT-2: Essential Spinal Seminar supervised by a MAPS expert instructor. To take the more advanced MAPS courses (MT-3: Intermediate Spinal Seminar) or to become a Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT), completion of the live in-person MT-2 Skills Check Lab is required. We also recommend the MT-2 Skills Check Lab for those looking to perfect the manual therapy skills learned in MT-2: Essential Spinal Seminar - REMOTE LIVE or for those who took MT-2 years ago and are looking to refine their manual therapy skills. MT-2 Skills Check Lab Pre-requisites: MT-2: Essential Spinal REMOTE LIVE or the live, in-person MT-2: Essential Spinal Seminar.
- Access to the internet via a desk or laptop computer or smartphone device

- No previous experience with manual therapy required
- Average overall competency of 70% required for successful completion. Written assignments worth 65% and class participation represents 35% of overall grade.
- Full CEUs require 100% attendance and completion of all Home Study assignments.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Once a participant has accessed the online content of a course, that registration is no longer be eligible for refund, and the ability to transfer will be limited to the registered participant, who is free to transfer into another MT-1 or MT-2 course on the MAPS schedule, if such a transfer is requested at least two weeks prior to the course date. Transfers into other MAPS courses or to another individual will not be allowed after the participant has commenced the online content of the course.

Please refer to MT-2 Full Course Competencies for proficiency participants should be aiming to accomplish after diligent practice of skills learned in MT-2. Proficiency in the Course Competencies are required for both the MAPS COMT and Orthopedic Manual Therapy Fellowship
- Recognize the difference between normal and abnormal movement patterns during passive spinal movements including accessory & physiological examination techniques.
- Identify four different grades of passive movement to manage spinal pathology (Grades I, II, III, and IV as per Maitland).
- Recall at least two examples of Maitland’s four grades of passive movement to a participant-selected spinal region.
- Describe Maitland’s clinical reasoning model, including eight clinical hypothesis categories per M. Jones and D. Rivett.
- Identify the dimensions of evidence-based clinical reasoning in the orthopedic manual therapy management of a patient with spinal pathology.
- Synthesize principles of treating pain and stiffness as per Maitland and other manual P.T.s.
- Indicate the most effective orthopedic manual therapy management of a patient with a spinal disorder based upon clinical assessment and clinical reasoning, rather than theoretical protocols.
- Integrate clinical reasoning skills to recognize movement anomalies in selected common spinal orthopedic conditions.
- Integrate evaluation skills in differential assessment and diagnosis in selected common spinal orthopedic conditions.
- Recognize how to quickly and effectively manage spinal orthopedic conditions using at least one known manual therapy technique.
Attention PTAs & ATs Attending MT-1 or MT-2:
PTAs and ATs attending any MAPS course specifically agree to identify themselves to the Course Instructor and limit their laboratory practice to the assessment of physiological movement up to but not beyond the first onset of resistance (R1). Thus, PTAs are required to limit their lab practice to only Grades I and II assessment, which are small and large amplitude movements respectively, which occur in the resistance free range prior to R1. Furthermore, PTAs attending any MAPS course specifically agree to limit their laboratory practice to physiological (osteokinematic) movements and refrain from performing accessory (arthrokinematic) movements.
The practice of mobilization/manipulation is legally regulated by state Practice acts, and MAPS does not advocate that any practitioners (PT, PTA, or others) practice any procedure outside their legal scope of practice. MAPS course content is not intended for use by ANY participant outside the scope of their license or relevant regulations. PTAs attending this course agree to limit their clinical practice, during and after any MAPS course, to their specific State practice act(s), and to comply with the directions of their supervising Physical Therapist in accordance with APTA HOD RC 31-01.
